Steryostypes in media

Stereotypes

Media institutions use stereotypes because the audience will instantly understand them. Think of stereotypes as a ‘visual shortcut’. They are repeated so often that we assume that they are in fact true.

Hero:
Strong
Powerful
Smart

Business women:
Suits
Hair up or short
Stern looking

Black youth:
Unemployed
Cornbraids
Baggy clothes

The media are always partying roles as stereotypes giving people the fixed interpretation of what a single person or a group of people are like. These can be for all different groups and kinds of people, from black youths, to homosexuals and this image is set in peoples minds.
